Even though we all sweat naturally even more so in humid, enclosed spaces, or when strenuously exercising, excessive sweating is actually a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis. People who suffer from hyper-hidrosis normally have excessive sweating of the feet, hands and armpits, although it’s not uncommon to also suffer from excessive sweating of the groin, back, scalp and pretty much any other areas that there are numerous sweat glands. There’s even one kind of excessive perspiration that only occurs during the night, called sleep hyperhidrosis. It doesn’t matter where the abnormal sweating occurs because all variations cause issues for the sufferer, from the sweaty hands causing accidents, a social problem with handshakes or armpit stains, and all will lead to body odour unless the sweat is washed off frequently.
To treat hyperhydrosis, it is important to know what causes normal sweat activation. In people with normal sweat mechanisms, the sweat glands are regulated by the central nervous system… specifically the sympathetic nervous system. We have hardly any control of this part of the nervous system which is what regulates our involuntary body activities such as our heart rate, breathing, gut movement etc.. until they go wrong.
The regulation of sweating goes wrong in sufferers of hyperhydrosis. It’s known that the cause is hyper-activity of the nerves leading to the eccrine glands, because botox injections will stop the over-sweating, as will severing the nerve and anti-cholinergic drugs. Those three methods to stop hyperhydrosis are quite drastic. Simpler solutions for uncontrollable sweating are mental relaxation techniques, not drinking caffeinated drinks, using strong antiperspirants such as those with aluminium chloride and avoiding spicy foods. Some people believe that sage tea and zinc may decrease sweating.
Almost all sufferers of profuse sweating will go for cheap, natural solutions, and if they don’t work will, think about the more drastic treatments. Some of the most advanced remedies such as drugs and surgery will have unwanted side effects, so check with a doctor before taking any action regarding profuse sweating.
