Get More Energy By Eating Healthy And Exercising

How Does Metabolism Work?

Your metabolic rate simply means the rate at which energy is used by your body to perform its normal functions. The energy is spent everywhere, all throughout your body, from your large organs like your heart and lungs to the tiniest of cells in your blood, all of this is happening every second of the day and most of us don’t realise it.

Exercise

Exercising every day will give you a higher metabolism. Intense aerobic exercises are needed to take your metabolic rate to its highest level so you can burn off more calories than you consume. Unfortunately there is no magic pill which will burn calories for you, so if you need to lose weight you just have to train harder. Using weights can also help to increase your metabolism. Better blood pressure, stronger muscles, flexible joints, healthy bones and longer endurance are all benefits of resistance training. Every pound of fat in your body contains 3,500 calories, this is simply stored energy, if you want to remove that stored energy you just have to start using it. Performing resistance training regularly will increase the rate at which you burn calories throughout the day, each pound of muscle that you add burns 50 calories each day without any extra effort other than your regular daily activities.

Sleep

Sleep plays a big role in boosting your energy and maintaining a healthy weight. If you suffer from broken sleep most nights of the week you may notice that you constantly have an increase in appetite, this is because broken sleep causes the release of a hormone called ghrelin which leads to hunger. So make sure your trying to get at least 7 hours quality sleep each night, if you’re like me and sometimes can’t get to sleep for hours try reading a book in bed. Make sure its fiction though or you’ll have your brain thinking even more. Another great method is to do a little meditation before you hit the sack, meditating helps you to clear your mind and will allow you to fall asleep a lot faster.

Diet

Eat Small And Eat Regularly

It sounds counter intuitive but eating smaller meals throughout the day will actually help increase your metabolism. Make sure your meals have all the essentials in balanced quantities – a little protein, a few carbs and a little healthy fat. This way you won’t expend lots of energy processing the food and your metabolism will stay high. Our digestive systems are definitely not designed to process the foods which most of us eat, weather you think it has evolved or been created, either way it is built to digest healthy nutrient rich foods. So feeding it processed, modified, chemical rich junk food will only confuse the process, your body will not know what to do with it and will begin to act erratically and use up more energy. Some people will get this wrong and just start eating double the amount of food they are currently eating, don’t do this! You must cut down the portions of the food you’re eating, not just add more meals.

Don’t Restrict Your Diet

Dieting by limiting calories will result in a reduced metabolic rate. Calorie restriction forces your body into “somatic response” and you will end up conserving energy throughout the day, dropping your metabolism. This event causes every system in your body to slow right down. The overall effect of this reaction is an erratic, random metabolic rate, resulting in muscle loss, mood swings and lack of sleep. Remember, keeping a steady metabolism is not about increasing or reducing the amount of calories you eat, its about eating the right types of calories, those which your body can actually process into useful living cells.
